December Letter to Parents

Dear Parent(s),

As we approach the Christmas Holidays I would like to update you with some items of news in the College.

  • Mr Martin Casey retired from the teaching staff at the end of November after a long career of dedicated service to the students of De La Salle College. We wish him well in his retirement and welcome his replacement Ms Jillian Lowry.
  • Fiachra Swan, of last year's Leaving Certificate class, was awarded an Entrance Scholarship to UCD to study Science. We congratulate him on his fine achievement.
  • The College won a Multicultural Award at the Media and Multicultural Awards in the GPO in November. The award recognises the numerous initiatives undertaken in the College to promote the integration of students from different nationalities and backgrounds. The College was nominated for the award by a 6th Year student, Boni Odoemene.
  • The Senior Rugby team played against the Victoria State team from Australia at the start of December. Many thanks to DLSP FC and their President, Mr Karl Burke, for hosting the game under the floodlights in Kilternan, and to Mr Brendan Cryan of the College staff.
  • Students from Class 3-1 organised a cake sale to raise funds for the Simon Community, funds much needed at this time of the year.
  • The College band, Mustang Salle, played a concert for the students on Thursday 6th December. With 20 students in the band, from first year through to sixth year, and playing guitars, drums, keyboards and brass/wind instruments, they put on a tremendous show. Presentations were made to four sixth year students, Aaron McGinnity, Kevin Curry, Daniel Plummer and Giacomo Rossi in recognition of their contribution to the band over the last six years. Many thanks are due to Mr Gerry McCann and Mr Brian Wynne who co-ordinate and prepare the band.
  • The annual collection for St Vincent de Paul was taken up the College. This is part of their Christmas Appeal and all monies raised are donated to the local conference.
  • The annual Christmas Carol Service is being held on Wednesday 12th December in the Assembly Hall. Thanks to all the students and teachers who are reading, singing and playing at this special event. Many thanks are also due to Ms Betty O'Connell for organising the service.
  • Christmas Exams will run from Thursday 13th December through to Friday 21st December. Students have their individual exam timetables.
  • The College will close after the exams on Friday 21st December and will re-open on Monday 7th January 2013.

Finally I would like to wish all our students, teachers, staff and retired staff, parents, friends, De La Salle Brothers and Le Chéile Trust, and everyone associated with the College a Holy, Peaceful and Happy Christmas.

Lorcan Balfe,

Principal.
