Thank You to All Who Made Our 'Open Evening' Such a Great Success

With recent painting works and roof renovation, this year's Open Evening was a chance to show off De La Salle College, Churchtown in all its glory. Well over one hundred pupils from all over the local schools got to experience the wonderful facilities and educational opportunities that the school has to offer.

Parents and potential students were guided ably by present La Sallians and teachers and visited many of the classrooms where demonstrations took place. All of the many academic subjects in the College gave a glimpse to what is on offer. The science labs wowed the young lads with fun experiments while the maths department showed how maths can be enjoyed! Always a highlight is the Woodwork and Technical Graphics rooms where boys were shown the fantastic projects that the students were making. Other stops were the well-stocked library, radio room, Computer Department and Resource room. The kitchen was a busy place with First Year cooks making delights for our visiting guests.

For many boys the sporting facilities are what they look forward to and they certainly were not disappointed. The visiting lads were able to take part in Rugby, Badminton and P.E. demonstrations and everyone commented on the superb sports hall that caters for all sports and budding sportsmen.

Back on the tour potential students learned about the merits of TY and the French Department was a particular delight for parents. One of the French classrooms had turned into a café and visitors were transported to Paris for a short while. Students taught visitors a little French while enjoying coffee and French pastries. All that was missing was a view of the Eiffel Tower but the Dublin Mountains is a lovely alternative vista.

Parents and students also visited the serenity of our oratory while next door the school band "rocked out" showing the musical talent and opportunities the College has to offer. Many guests commented on the lovely garden that the TY students maintain each year. Boys who enjoyed art also got their hands dirty with the fun art demonstrations on show.

After the exciting and busy tour, Principal Elizabeth O'Connell and teachers greeted the potential parents and students. Many parents commented on the wonderful facilities and opportunities the school has to offer and in particular the great student/teacher relationship in the school. Overall the day was a great success. Special thanks must go to all the De La Salle students who volunteered and were the stars of the show. They were a credit to themselves and the school and showed a wonderful example to hopefully some future "La Sallians".
