Art, Craft and Design

The Leaving Certificate Art curriculum consists of two main components – practical and written.

The practical component of the course develops pupils’ skills in drawing, design and craft. Crafts on offer include Ceramics/Pottery, Batik, Calligraphy, Lino Printing, Poster Design, Puppetry and Screen Printing.

The written component of the curriculum focuses on History and Appreciation of Art, which accounts for 37.5% of the overall mark for Leaving Certificate. The History element covers Irish and European art history and the Appreciation section

It fosters an appreciation and understanding of product design, ergonomics, architecture and town planning, film and animation, public spaces and sculpture; and museums, galleries and interpretative centres. Throughout the course pupils are taken to galleries and museums and are encouraged to visit galleries on a regular basis and abroad when the opportunity arises.

Career Options

The role the arts play in developing a flexible, creative and innovative workforce is well documented and acknowledged. The visual arts provide opportunities for all students to build 21st century skills specifically Creativity and Innovation; Critical Thinking and Problem Solving; Communication and Collaboration. We are currently witnessing the arts becoming core to our education system in a new platform known as STEAM. This is an educational approach to learning that uses Science, Technology, Engineering, the Arts and Mathematics as access points for guiding student inquiry, dialogue, and critical thinking.
