Drop Everything and Read

December 6, 2012

From the 26th to the 30th of November our first year students, along with their class teachers, discarded their school books and read their novels or newspapers for 20 minutes of each day.

This idea of 'dropping everything' in order to read is designed to encourage reading for pleasure and hopefully begin to foster a love of reading. We have a wonderful library in our school that we want to encourage more students to use; this initiative forced many previously unwilling students to go into the library and take out a book. The hope is they will continue to avail of our library service.

The feedback from the First Years and their teachers has been very positive, everybody appears to have enjoyed the experience. Thank you to all teachers and students who took part and to our librarian Ms Sturley, who dealt with the sudden rush for books in the library.

In the new year it is our intention to roll out this initiative to other years in the school.
